February Odds and Ends

Greetings, Everyone,

I continue to enjoy our monthly Genie meetings and all the people who are able to participate.  We’ve enjoyed our change to the Co-op and next month (on March 16) we will return to the Ferndale Library for the rest of the year.

At our recent meeting we talked about family relationships, including what “once removed” means.  If you are interested in this, Diahan Southard posted this blog with an explanation much better than mine.  It even has a cool chart showing how you can be a cousin once removed in two different ways.  For geeks only: https://www.yourdnaguide.com/ydgblog/2020/2/13/what-is-removed-cousin

Also at our meeting Jo Guthrie spoke about the Tice or Dice family.  If any of you want to follow up on those lines, Jo says “I would be more than willing to share or assist or discuss.”  Her contact info is in the WGS directory or from me.

Next Wednesday, February 26-29, a few of us will be in Salt Lake City for the RootsTech Conference.  You can join us for live-streaming or videos of this year and previous years starting here.  https://www.rootstech.org/salt-lake/live-stream-schedule   On social media use hashtag #notatRootsTech.  Ha!

WGS Research Like a Pro Seminar featuring Diana Elder is on Saturday, March 28.  Early bird registration prices before March 1.

The Whatcom County Library System has goals this year to support voter registration and the 2020 Census.  My tip is: if you will be voting on the Democratic presidential ticket in Washington and want your vote to count, wait until after Super Tuesday to turn in your ballot.  Of the thirteen people on the ballot, five have already withdrawn and others may withdraw after Super Tuesday.  Candidates need to meet a 15% threshold to be represented at the national convention.  Turn in your ballot by March 10.

Karen Fisher is reaching out to invite you to join the C2C Dignity Vigils. Weekly vigils are Thursdays 12-1 at the Customs and Border Protection Facility at 1431 Sunset Ave in Ferndale and Saturdays 12-1:30 at the Ferndale River Walk. The complete poster is here. Border Patrol Poster

From time to time I can post personal invitations and information if you send it to me.

So long for now, Judith

February Genies Meeting at the Co-op Next Monday

Attention:  The library is closed next Monday.  Ferndale Genies gather at the Co-op Bakery CafĂ© building on February 17, 2020 at 1:00.

The Bakery Building is at 405 E. Holly across Holly from the downtown Food Co-op.  Our meeting is in the Connections Classroom which is Suite 103.  You enter from the Holly St. side.  It’s a large room and everyone is welcome.  No reservations necessary.

There is some parking behind the Bakery building but they ask that we not park in the parking lot of the main Co-op building.

You can purchase sandwiches and wraps from the refrigerator case in the Bakery Deli or go across the street for a hot bar, salad bar, deli case, made-to-order sandwiches, hot drinks, and bakery case.  I like to get salad fixin’s in a giant bowl and add food from the hot bar.  Co-op members and non-members are welcomed with no price difference.

Hope to see you there.

Cindy, Linda, Linda, and I are off to RootsTech with sessions starting on Wednesday, Feb. 26.  Free live streaming is here: https://www.rootstech.org/salt-lake/live-stream-schedule  and video archives back to 2015 are here:  https://www.rootstech.org/video-archive.  If you have time for entertainment, don’t pass by the General Sessions.  They are mostly non-genealogists, famous in other arenas, with their family histories presented to them.  Surprisingly entertaining.

Looking forward, the WGS Spring Seminar is bringing my personal favorite Diana Elder for a “Research Like a Pro” Seminar. It’s a full day on March 28.  Early bird prices available until March 1.

BTW, I am looking for my copy of Kenyatta Berry’s The Family Tree Toolkit and any other books you might have borrowed.  Thank you.
