Join the Genies this coming Monday for
our monthly meeting.
Monday, December 16 is the next
Genies monthly meeting at the Ferndale Library at 1:00. This will be a
group effort.
1. Still looking for a volunteer to co-facilitate
this meeting. Coaching available. If
you have never facilitated a meeting, this is a good time to start among
friends. Email ferndalegenies at gmail.com.
2. Volunteer for us to work your brick
wall. We will need a written description before the meeting.
3. Would anyone like to host
holiday refreshments? Only if you want to.
As usual, I will be talking about
things I hear about and have been working on.
This is the time of year I like to think about goals. For the meeting, think of sharing something
you accomplished this year and something to work toward next year.
Right now, I am interested in Genetic
Affairs and a new site I just heard about called Shared Clustering. We’ll talk about DNA at the end for people who
are interested.
Sylvia sent this along: “This is an interesting article.
This might make it harder for any of us to use the GEDMATCH database”. We’ll ask her why she thinks the sale of
GedMatch will make it harder to use. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/new-owner-consumer-dna-database-gedmatch-vows-fight-police-search-n1099091
All my favorite podcasts are hopping. We are so fortunate to have this regular free
resource available. Are you Interested?
Most, if not all, DNA tests are on
deep discount. Ask if you want to know
more.
In other news:
It’s time to renew your society
memberships. Whatcom Genealogical Society
is a bargain at $15.00 individual / $18.00 per family. You can also pay for an
affiliated Washington State Genealogical Society membership for an additional
$10.00 for individual or $11.00 for family membership. You will be sent their
electronic newsletter. They do a good
job of announcing meetings for Whatcom, Skagit, and Snohomish societies and
national conferences. (Note: I will not
be blogging about events as before.)
MyHeritage always has free uploading
of raw DNA from other DNA sites with a $29 fee for access to their best DNA
features. Through Dec. 18 these features
will be added without the additional fee.
You may remember that I pushed for transferring raw DNA to MyHeritage
last year when they announced they were starting to charge $29 for their best
DNA tools.
Randy Seavers
at Genea-Musings blogged here: GeneaNet.org Offers a Beautiful
Fan Family Chart for Free! You submit a Gedcom file to GeneaNet. Randy shows a number of samples in his post.
Lastly:
Genies Monthly Monday,
January 20, 2020. The library is closed for
the MLK holiday and we’re looking for a restaurant:
1. Help us identify a restaurant for our January
and February meetings. We’re looking for a location with a private
room. Not expensive. Elizabeth has got a few ideas for us.
2. How about a volunteer host to make a
reservation, receive RSVP's and greet people at the lunch?
See you Monday!
