Research and Reading Continue Unabated

March 16.  Here we are on the day we might have been at a Genies meeting.  Luckily, genealogy is very much an online pursuit.  Daily I receive emails suggesting things to do and buy.  Most basic/no health DNA kits are $59.  And free Irish records continue a little longer.

For our travelers and former residents (you know who you are):  If you haven’t heard, our schools and libraries are closed.  And starting today dine-in restaurants, bars, entertainment and recreation venues., and events over 50 people are closed.  I expect some restaurants will start drive-in and delivery options which are still allowed.

Research Like a Pro

As expected, the WGS cancelled the Research Like a Pro seminar the end of this month and will reschedule in the fall.  It may be a disappointment now but those RLP ladies offer so many free options.

FREE: Today's podcast episode of Research Like a Pro is about how to use a research log in your genetic genealogy research…Read more and listen here: RLP 88: DNA Research Logs.

FREE: They are offering their “Research Like a Pro in 30 Minutes a Day” recorded webinar for everyone.  In the webinar, they share the process of creating a research objective, timeline, locality guide, and research plan to get your project started. Then they discuss carrying the plan through by logging, making citations, and doing a research report. Watch the webinar here: Research Like a Pro in 30 Minutes a Day: Free Webinar and 14 Day Challenge.

FREE: “Throughout the webinar, we discuss the 14-day Research Like a Pro challenge that we did last January. We are excited to announce that we are going to be doing the challenge again this month! We will start on Monday, March 23. Learn more and sign up here: 14 Day Research Like a Pro Challenge.

Books and Ideas of things to do

Sylvia says: “Another thing to do is to read books. I have just read a great book called Inheritance by Dani Shapiro. It is her fascinating search-and-discovery story of her biological father. Not what you would expect at all!!! “

Claudia Breland suggests this article.  It’s a good read for us and for relatives who aren’t very interested YET.

Kitty Cooper, a well-known DNA blogger offers this post:  A Reading List to Stay at Home With

“Since you are all carefully practicing social distancing in order to do your part to slow this pandemic, I put together some DNA focused reading recommendations. I am very grateful to my kindle app which makes it easy to get books. My favorite new book about DNA and genealogy is The Lost Family: How DNA […]”

Kitty added this link at the bottom to a technical, graph filled article for anyone who hasn’t decided to stay home.  She says:

“Last but not least here is a good article about why we should be all practicing social distancing
https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca end “.

Roberta usually blogs about DNA and here she offers 20 activities.  They lean toward DNA but it that is not your fancy skim past those and you will find some traditional genealogy and at the end quilting and gardening.  She put spring cleaning last.  I hope I will get to that eventually.

Lastly, here’s a suggestion from Sylvia: “encourage all our people (and everyone you know) to fill out the census as completely and accurately as possible, so that when future genealogy buffs look for the little wavy green leaf hint next to our name on the tree...we can have a way to tell them who we were and something of our life at that moment (creepy thought, us being in the past tense, but there we will be!).”

We should be receiving census instructions by the end of this month.  I’m glad there will be an online option for filing.

Soon I will post a writeup from Sylvia who says she is “adapting the Research Like A Pro steps to make them work better for me” and includes an Evidence Analysis document she has compiled.

I encourage anyone who has something to share to send it along to Ferndalegenies at gmail.com.

Take care and stay safe.  I am thinking of you all.
